Key dates to look for in JFK halves?
I'm going to be picking up 1-2 boxes of halves a week starting today and was wondering other than pre-1971 halves which dates I should look for. I really haven't paid much attention to numismatic values, just looking for silver.

Re: Key dates to look for in JFK halves?
Starting in 1992S some of the "S"es were silver, not sure how you tell the two apart, also my 2006 Redbook lists the 1998S silver matte finish as valuable-$260 in MS-65. Good hunting!

Pre 1970, not 71.
Some of the proofs were 40%. I'm not sure which ones, but you'll quickly learn to spot silver by the rim. Happy hunting. |
Re: Key dates to look for in JFK halves?
Actually the 1970 date is 40% silver, but they were only offered in a proof set or mint set that year I think which makes it highly unlikely you'll find them in circ. or at the bank. I would look for also the '74 double die obverse, and set aside any post '01 halves.

Re: Key dates to look for in JFK halves?
Thanks for the tips. What's unique about post-2001 halves? Are they just hard to find?

Re: Key dates to look for in JFK halves?
I believe the '01 and later halves have only been available directly from the mint. The mintage has been tracking down ever since.

Re: Key dates to look for in JFK halves?
In the years that Kennedy halves and SBA dollars were minted together (79-81) some halves were struck on the slightly smaller dollar planchets. It will be lighter and thinner than a regular half. Last I heard, these errors go for $500+. Read about it here: http://www.kennedyhalfdollar.com/abo...g-planchet.htm

This post needs to be in the prospecting section..Can someone move it?

Re: Key dates to look for in JFK halves?
The topic of this thread is about key dates in the series, which is a numismatic subject. I don't believe it should be moved.

Re: Key dates to look for in JFK halves?
Funny, I was thinking the same thing not 15 minutes ago while sorting through some.
I pulled some of the semi key dates according to my RED BOOK. I figured why not. They aren't ms-63, but I figure I can always get my .50 back should I decide to. Few dates: Ms-63 grade Red Book Value 83 P/D = $5.50 85 P = $5.00 86 P = $7.00 86 D = $5.50 87 P/D = $5.00 88 P = $5.00 91 D = $5.00 ALSO: 74 D Double Die = $50.00 |

Re: Key dates to look for in JFK halves?
The following are hard to find, may not necessarily be worth money though.
1970 (I think P,D, and maybe S) - 40% silver 1972-1974 DDO. I believe the following years had a double die error. 1974 probably the most well known. 1987 is a hard year to find, all mint marks 2002- present - these were only issued in mint sets. Whatever is in circulation was broken out of them. All JFKs - S mintmark - these are proof variations. There's a matte version of the 1994-S silver proof. That's worth money too. |
